Who We Are

It was on the first Tuesday of no particular month 1992 in a spacious spiritual room provided by the Redemptorist Fathers in their Dundalk Monastery that the first family members and their friends came together to share their knowledge and experience about Alzheimer's Disease. Thus began the Family Support Group that has flourished and become a great source of comfort to many families over the years.

It was from within this group that The North Louth Branch Alzheimer's Society of Ireland was formed in 1994.Following the establishment of the Branch a group of Voluntary Fundraisers sought a meeting with the full Branch membership and this group agreed to run a Casino Night. That event lit the torch that ensured the dream of building an Alzheimer Day Centre became a reality. This energetic fundraising team raised £446k within 2 years. The Day Centre site was donated by the HSENE thus enabling the “State of the Art” Day Centre The Birches, for people within North Louth to open on June 1st 2000. The Day Centre was totally funded by the people of North Louth and their continued generosity ensures that the excellent standard of care in The Birches is maintained.

The North Louth Branch Alzheimer Society of Ireland formed in 1994 presently has 10 branch members who work and fundraise in a totally voluntary capacity. Within the branch is a Core Management Committee who meets monthly with The Birches Nurse Manager Olive Joyce to review the finances.

The Birches is partially funded by the HSENE and The North Louth Branch has to fund the remaining 60% annually to maintain the present level of care. Every euro raised goes to the running of The Birches Services and our new Outreach Service.
